This is Vietti's flagship Barolo under its old name, and with more than fifteen years since the vintage, most of the waiting has already been done for you. "Castiglione" comes from Castiglione Falletto, the village where the Vietti cellar sits. From the 2021 vintage the word came off the front label, and the wine is now simply Vietti's Barolo. It isn't from a single cru. Vietti builds it from Nebbiolo, so it speaks for the zone rather than one hillside. That's why we like finding it as a back-vintage bottle: the single-vineyard wines get the headlines, but the blended Barolo is where a house shows its hand year after year, and Vietti has been doing that since 1873. Stand the bottle upright a day ahead, then give it time in a decanter.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2008 Barolo Castiglione is striking. Sweet red berries, freshly cut flowers, spices and mint are some of the many nuances that flow from this impeccable, mid-weight Barolo. The 2008 Castiglione impresses for its exceptional balance, polished finish and sheer beauty. This is a feminine Castiglione graced with exquisite class. With time in the glass the wine fleshes out beautifully. Once again, the Castiglione delivers incredible value." —Antonio Galloni

More about Vietti

One of the great names from Barolo, Vietti has been a pioneering force in Piedmont for decades, going back to the 1961 Rocche, one of the first single-vineyard designated bottles ever. The Rocche, and other single Cru wines from outside Castiglione, are among the most sought-after Barolo being made today.

Vietti also makes a Barolo normale called Castiglione, which confusingly is made mostly with fruit from Ravera, in the village of Novello, rather than Castiglione. It’s a good wine to stock up on just about every vintage. The style at Vietti is neither particularly traditional or particularly modern: a down-the-middle approach that is focused primarily on quality and terroir expression.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin with white truffle or butter and sage, agnolotti del plin, roast pheasant or rabbit with porcini, aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barolo profile: red cherry, dried flowers and tar, with dried herbs and a savoury, earthy edge. It's typically full of flavour without being heavy, with firm Nebbiolo tannins and bright acidity, finishing long and dry. With bottle age, Barolo usually softens and picks up leather, truffle and dried-fruit notes.
