Chardonnay from a village built on Pinot Noir: this vintage Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is the wine Gaston Chiquet is best known for, and it tells a story few Côte des Blancs bottles can. Aÿ made its name on Pinot Noir. Its still "Vin d'Aÿ" was poured for kings and popes long before Champagne learned to sparkle. On the village's western side, though, in the Vauzelles and Haut Crohauts parcels, Gaston planted Chardonnay in clay and limestone over chalk. His son Claude made the first Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ from that fruit in 1950. Until then it had gone into a still wine named after the vineyard. Today Nicolas and Antoine Chiquet, with Antoine's daughter Marion, are fussy about the details: even the dosage and topping-up use juice from this same cuvée. What you get is everything we love about this house (innately lovable, effortless Champagne), with the mineral charm of Chardonnay and the character of a great Pinot village in one sustainably farmed, dry vintage bottling.

More about Gaston Chiquet

Nicolas Chiquet planted the first vines in 1746, and eight generations of Chiquets have tended Dizy's soil ever since. Gaston registered the company in 1935 and expanded to Aÿ, Cumières, and Hautvillers. Antoine and Nicolas Chiquet now run things—hands-on, honest, focused on the vineyards. These grower Champagnes are innately lovable, tactful, and attractive.

Flatiron's Take

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters with mignonette; langoustines or scallops in brown butter; warm gougères; aged Comté; roast chicken with morels and cream.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic vintage Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with notes of brioche and toasted nuts from time on the lees and a chalky minerality. Medium-bodied and elegant, with fine bubbles and bright acidity, it typically carries a little more roundness than a Côte des Blancs Blanc de Blancs, finishing dry, long and saline.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
