Most vintage Champagne tells you the year. This one also tells you exactly which vineyards it came from: three named premier cru lieux-dits, split evenly between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Pinot comes from 30-year-old vines in Colombier in Hautvillers. The Chardonnay is drawn from Haut de Souschienne in Dizy and La Grange in Hautvillers, all on clay and limestone over chalk. Nicolas Chiquet doesn't use oak. His view is that ripe, concentrated fruit and malolactic fermentation give a Champagne all the body and texture it needs, and the 2019 was made entirely in stainless steel and then given 48 months on its lees. The family has a long record of doing things their own way: in 1919 brothers Fernand and Gaston Chiquet were among the first growers to keep their grapes and make and sell their own Champagne. The result is the house style we keep coming back to: innately lovable, tactful and effortless, yet genuinely attractive. If you already love the Brut Tradition, this is the next step up, with the character of one vintage and real site detail.

More about Gaston Chiquet

Nicolas Chiquet planted the first vines in 1746, and eight generations of Chiquets have tended Dizy's soil ever since. Gaston registered the company in 1935 and expanded to Aÿ, Cumières, and Hautvillers. Antoine and Nicolas Chiquet now run things—hands-on, honest, focused on the vineyards. These grower Champagnes are innately lovable, tactful, and attractive.

Tasting Profile

Expect a balanced, generous premier cru Champagne: the Pinot Noir typically brings red apple and red-berry depth, while the Chardonnay adds lemon, white flowers and a chalky lift. With no oak, the long lees ageing usually contributes brioche and toasted-nut notes, a fine, creamy mousse and fresh acidity, finishing dry, clean and gently saline.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
