Riesling from one of the Pfalz's most serious estates, and the easiest way to get to know what von Winning does. The estate is based in Deidesheim, in Germany's southwest. Winemaker Stephan Attmann farms the best sites there and in neighbouring Forst, bringing an intensity he picked up working at estates in the Côte d'Or. That goes as far as planting his newer vines at about 9,500 per hectare, where under 5,000 is typical. The fruit for this wine is farmed organically. The vineyards are on loam and sandstone. The 2025 comes from the latest harvest, and it belongs in the fridge door, not the cellar.

More about von Winning

Von Winning in Deidesheim makes some of the finest dry wines in the Pfalz, if not all of Germany. The estate's roots go back to 1849, but its fortunes rose in 2007 when Stephan Attmann took charge and moved Riesling out of stainless steel and back into large old oak fuder, with long, slow ferments and many months on the lees. The Grosses Gewächs read like a geology lesson: basalt in Pechstein, sandstone in Kirchenstück, limestone in Kalkofen. Rich yet ethereal, and built to age.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pork schnitzel with lemon, trout with brown butter and almonds, Vietnamese summer rolls with nuoc cham, fish tacos with lime slaw, or Alsatian-style tarte flambée.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic dry Pfalz Riesling profile: ripe lemon, green apple and white peach, with a stony, mineral edge. It's typically medium-bodied and juicy, a little rounder and riper than a Mosel Riesling, with lively, mouthwatering acidity and a crisp, clean, dry finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
