The other single vineyard in the lineup, and a study in contrast with Ratschen. Ried Weinberg is home to the family's oldest vines, planted on deep, humus-rich, iron-rich clay-loam at a mid-slope position that brings better airflow, drainage, and sun. Where Ratschen is gravelly and firm, Weinberg is denser and plusher, its tannins fuller and more velvety — we reach for "blue Pomerol" to describe it. The iron-slate character of Eisenberg runs right through it, but here it arrives with more flesh and generosity. Native-yeast fermented, aged long in large neutral oak. From the poised 2021 vintage. Pre-Arrival, arriving mid-July.

More about Wachter Wiesler

The sanguine, blue and green slate minerality of Eisenberg make some of the very best Blaufränkisch anywhere. The least populated sub region of Burgenland and filled with polycultural farms, is actually cooler than its northern counterparts, leading to higher acidities and signature spicy, violet and lilac toned, black fruited, and intensely mineral red wines.

Christoph Wachter, who took over his family estate at the tender age of 20, manages to capture the essence of the place, across his whole line up from entry level regional blend to top, single-vineyard bottles.

Vineyards are now certified organic, with some biodynamic methods employed to create a living biosphere for his vines. In the cellar grapes are fermented with partial whole cluster, no new oak, with long aging in order to capture the terroir through the grapes.

Perfect Pairings

Braised short ribs, roast duck, venison stew, or beef with wild mushrooms. Also excellent with rich paprika goulash and grilled lamb.

Tasting Profile

Raspberry, boysenberry, and dark plum with stone, spice, and a violet lift over ferrous minerality. Medium-full, plush and velvety tannin, fresh acidity underneath, savory mineral finish. The richest, most generous of the estate's reds.
