The Calera clone is the closest thing California Pinot Noir has to a smuggling legend: cuttings that Josh Jensen selected in Burgundy — the story ties them to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti — and brought home in the 1970s to plant on limestone in the Gavilan Mountains. Whitcraft grows that heritage selection at Pence Ranch in the Sta. Rita Hills, one of California's coldest, windiest Pinot addresses, where the valley runs east-west and pulls ocean air straight through the vines. Drake Whitcraft, who took over the winery his late father Chris founded, makes it the low-intervention way his family has always worked: native fermentation, generous whole cluster, no new oak, and just enough sulfur to keep it honest. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is Pinot with a rare combination of concentration and lift — perfume over power.

"Within the quartet of single-clone bottlings from the Pence Ranch site, the 2023 Pinot Noir Pence Ranch Calera Clone is the most structured and intense. The nose straddles red and black fruits with intensity and poise, leading to a silky yet stiff, textural palate with a sinewy structure. The finish bursts into swelling, fine tannins bound with twisted, coiled energy that regenerates with impressive length.
