This is Aubert de Villaine's other life. The co-director of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti runs his own estate in the Cote Chalonnaise, and La Digoine is its flagship red — a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Bouzeron farmed with the same obsessive care he brings to grander addresses, at a fraction of the cost. The 2013 comes from a cooler, classically structured vintage, and with a decade-plus of age it has shed its early edges. This is mature, ready-to-drink Burgundy from one of the region's living legends. A graceful pour for those who want DRV pedigree without the DRC price.

More about A et P de Villaine

Aubert de Villaine, the legendary co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, took a different path with his wife Paméla in Bouzeron, a village south of Beaune on the Côte Chalonnaise. Since 1971 they've been crafting Aligotés that put Bouzeron on the map—the village earned its own AOC in 1997, thanks largely to their work. The estate practices organic farming and produces elegant, mineral-driven whites that show how much more Aligoté can be when it's taken seriously. This is old-world sophistication from a vigneron who refused to settle.
