Aubert de Villaine — yes, the co-director of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti — makes his own wines in the Cote Chalonnaise, and they're some of Burgundy's smartest buys. La Fortune is a single-vineyard Bourgogne Cote Chalonnaise Pinot Noir (from vines in Bouzeron), typically a touch lighter and more immediately charming than its sibling La Digoine. The 2013 came from a cool, structured vintage, and with over a decade in bottle it has rounded into easy maturity. This is library-aged red Burgundy from a legend, ready to pour tonight.

More about A et P de Villaine

Aubert de Villaine, the legendary co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, took a different path with his wife Paméla in Bouzeron, a village south of Beaune on the Côte Chalonnaise. Since 1971 they've been crafting Aligotés that put Bouzeron on the map—the village earned its own AOC in 1997, thanks largely to their work. The estate practices organic farming and produces elegant, mineral-driven whites that show how much more Aligoté can be when it's taken seriously. This is old-world sophistication from a vigneron who refused to settle.
