Aubert de Villaine — the co-director of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti — runs his own Cote Chalonnaise estate, and Les Clous is one of its lesser-seen single-vineyard reds, a Bourgogne Cote Chalonnaise Pinot Noir (from vines in Bouzeron) made with the same meticulous, organically minded farming as the rest of the range. The 2013 came from a cool, classically built vintage, and a decade-plus has carried it into mature, savory territory. A rare library bottling that delivers serious Burgundy provenance without the trophy price.

More about A et P de Villaine

Aubert de Villaine, the legendary co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, took a different path with his wife Paméla in Bouzeron, a village south of Beaune on the Côte Chalonnaise. Since 1971 they've been crafting Aligotés that put Bouzeron on the map—the village earned its own AOC in 1997, thanks largely to their work. The estate practices organic farming and produces elegant, mineral-driven whites that show how much more Aligoté can be when it's taken seriously. This is old-world sophistication from a vigneron who refused to settle.
