This is Chardonnay grown on the clay-marl and loess-loam soils of the Lohpfad site in Ingelheim, in the far northern reaches of Rheinhessen, and it makes a strong case for German Chardonnay as a serious proposition. Simone Adams farms her ten hectares biodynamically, letting the clay-rich Lohpfad site speak through a taut, mineral-driven white. The winemaking is hands-off: native-yeast ferments, minimal sulfur, nothing forced. If you love white Burgundy but want something less predictable, this is a lovely detour.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2023 Chardonnay Lohpfad is from an east-facing parcel within the Schlossberg. This fermented in both barrique and Stück. Slightly smoky dried corn husk is smooth and fresh on the nose. The palate is absolutely creamy, wonderfully compact and imbued with ripe, juicy Mirabelle fruit. This strikes a gorgeous balance. That textural, varietal nature of Chardonnay shines with purity." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

Robert Parker

93 points

"From an east-facing site on heavy clay marl soil and 21- to 43-year-old vines, the 2023 Lohpfad Chardonnay is full-bodied, fresh and intense, generous, saline and lemon-bitter. The long, intense and elegant, stimulating saline and aromatic finish features tropical fruit flavors, such as ripe pears, melons, baby pineapples and lemon rind. Aged in stück and barriques, this rich but elegant and well-balanced wine is an excellent effort. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in February 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
