A gluggable, low-alcohol red from one of the last surviving cellars of coastal Colares, this is the kind of quiet find that rewards the curious. Adega Viuva Gomes traces to 1808, named for the widow Gomes who kept it going; today father and son Jose and Diogo Baeta farm on clay soils in the Atlantic-cooled zone near Sintra, working nearly extinct native grapes. The Pirata is their 100% Castelao bottled under the broader Lisboa designation, fermented spontaneously and raised in stainless steel. At barely 10.5% alcohol it drinks fresh and light on its feet, more Atlantic than sun-baked. Serve it with a slight chill and you have a genuinely food-friendly red that overdelivers.

Viúva Gomes has been a fixture in Colares since 1808, one of Portugal's most idiosyncratic coastal regions. Named for Widow Gomes, who founded the estate centuries ago, the winery is now run by father and son José and Diogo Baeta, farming tiny parcels near the sea with complete respect for their organic methods. They work with rare indigenous varieties like Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares, producing wines that speak to terroir over technique. These are genuinely uncommon Portuguese wines from a producer still making wine like it's always been made.

Tasting Profile
