A dry Pinot Noir from a tiny Mosel estate. That alone makes it worth a look: this is white-wine country, though the producer will tell you light reds like Pinot can ripen here too. Andreas Adam's Pinot vines grow in the Dhron valley, a small side valley of the Mosel. For the 2022 the grapes were destemmed with some stems added back, and the wine spent two years in small barrels without going through malolactic fermentation. The estate's usual cellar rules apply as well: ambient yeast only, and no enzymes. In the Mosel, 2022 was hot and very dry for most of the season, but rain and a long, cold autumn gave wines that taste more classically cool-climate than rich and ripe. That's exactly what you want from Pinot grown this far north. Adam made his first official vintage in 2000 on a single hectare his grandfather owned, and the estate is still only about 5 hectares, so this red is a small corner of a small operation. Pour it for anyone who thinks German Pinot only comes from further south.

More about AJ Adam

A. J. Adam takes us to Dhron, just off the much-beaten path of the Mosel river. Dhron is named for a river that flows into the Mosel. Its steep, slatey vineyards form the tributary's northern bank.

The sites are steeper and at higher altitude than most of Mosel. The wines are a little wispier and saltier. The fruit is cooler and whiter.

Adam is Dhron's undisputed star. He makes extraordinary dry Rieslings and Kabinetts from Hofberg, the top site in Dhron.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with chanterelles, seared duck breast with a cherry sauce, pork tenderloin with braised lentils, or a mushroom and Gruyère tart.

Tasting Profile

Expect a light-bodied, cool-climate Pinot Noir: red and sour cherry, redcurrant and a touch of spice, with a savoury lift from the stems and subtle oak from time in small barrels. Skipping malolactic keeps the acidity bright and crunchy, the tannins fine and the finish dry and fresh. Think a leaner, more vibrant red Burgundy.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
