The jewel in Albert Mann's crown, and a half-bottle of liquid history now more than 25 years old. Selection des Grains Nobles means individually selected, nobly-rotten (botrytis-affected) berries, picked grain by grain, the Alsace equivalent of a great Sauternes. This comes from the Grand Cru Furstentum, whose steep, south-facing slopes of marl, limestone, and sandstone are warm and well-drained, ideal for ripening Gewurztraminer to opulence. Mann has farmed biodynamically since 1997. A 1998 SGN like this is built to age for decades, and it's arrived: a special-occasion sip best poured in small glasses, well chilled, with or as dessert.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Reticent, musky aromas of poire, brown butter and spring flowers, plus a hint of white raisin. Supersweet and rather eau de vie-like; chewy, thick and voluptuous, with just enough balancing acidity. Impressively concentrated but extremely unevolved. A powerful wine that reveals strong soil tones on the dusty, impressively long finish." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 1998 Gewurztraminer Furstentum Selection Grains Nobles was harvested on October 28. It projects a mouth-watering rose water and flower-filled nose. Medium to full-bodied, and oily-textured, it has extraordinary purity to its jammy apricot, peach, red berry, and spice-flavored character. This supple, elegant, and powerful wine is sure to wow tasters over the next 12-15 years." —Pierre Rovani

Tasting Profile

Lusciously sweet and honeyed with apricot jam, candied ginger, lychee, and spice. Full and velvety, but bright acidity keeps it lively. Long, sappy finish.
