A forty-seven-year-old museum piece from the man who defined modern Monforte. Aldo Conterno split from his brother Giovanni (of Giacomo Conterno) in 1969 and built his own estate around the Bussia MGA. Vigna Cicala is a specific block within Bussia Soprana, entirely owned by the family, bottled only in top vintages and only from vines at least fifteen years old. 1978 is one of the great classical Barolo vintages of the 20th century — and this wine was made by Aldo himself, decades before he passed in 2012. At nearly half a century old, it's a fragile, profound document: dried rose, sour cherry settling into forest floor, roasted gamebird, tar, dried tea, sweet earth. The tannins have long since melted. Open with care, give it air, drink with reverence. A piece of Piedmont history.

Antonio Galloni

"Lively red. Conterno's 1978 Cicala is fresh, vibrant and full of life. It displays a beautiful nose of roses, spices and licorice, along with flavors of dark macerated cherries and tar on a structured frame. Though still youthful, this superbly well-balanced wine is hard to resist today. One of the finest wines I have tasted from this producer." —Antonio Galloni

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Simple roasted poultry, white truffle risotto in season, aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano with walnut, or — most honestly — just a quiet glass on its own.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied, fully mature, ethereal. Dried rose, sour cherry, forest floor, roasted game, tar, dried tea, sweet earth, tobacco. Melted tannins, integrated acidity, fragile silky core, profound length.
