Malbec as a window into a specific place. Altos las Hormigas sources this from Paraje Altamira in the high Uco Valley, planted around 1,200 meters on the limestone-laced alluvial soils that define the appellation. Working with terroir specialist Pedro Parra, who has dug over 1,500 soil pits chasing Mendoza's chalky gold, the team makes this in the more elegant, aromatic register that Altamira is known for, the cooler, more perfumed counterpoint to Gualtallary's power. Aged in concrete and large neutral oak to keep the fruit and minerality front and center. Drink now or hold a few years.

Robert Parker

"From silty soils at the estate Jardín Altamira site, the 2021 Malbec Appellation Altamira is another benchmark example of Altamira's distinctiveness. A broad, expansive and expressive bouquet of crystal-clear purple flower aromas bounds from the glass, supported by a rich yet measured bed of black and purple fruits. The palate is both wide and broad, with a laser-focused, tensile core, releasing into a finish that is equally high and refreshing yet deep and grounded. This is all about flowers and textural breadth, sitting lower in the mouth with a pronounced horizontal richness, juxtaposing the equally fantastic Appellation Gualtallary bottling, which exudes a more vertical, stony profile with a distinctly herbal bouquet. Even while attempting to correct for vintage variation, I find the Altamira wine a touch more complete and three-dimensional, but it really is splitting a hair." —Matthew Luczy

"With fragrant, fresh red fruit and graceful floral notes, this is a beautiful wine with which to begin to understand the top wines of Altos Las Hormigas and their delicate hand in Paraje Altamira terroir. There™s an undercurrent of wild herbs and spices, with a sanguine edge and graphite-like tannins on the finish."

"In this Malbec, energy and subtle elegance shine through the aromas and the palate. It's lively and offers a nose of crushed cranberries. Fine tannins and excellent acidity support flavors of cherry, red plum and cranberry. Saline notes add to the wine's complexity." —Jesica Vargas

More about Altos las Hormigas

In 1995, when everyone else was planting Cabernet Sauvignon, winemaker Alberto Antonini and entrepreneur Antonio Morescalchi bet everything on Malbec in Mendoza. They were right. Altos las Hormigas pioneered terroir-driven Malbec with biodynamic farming, minimal intervention, and deep knowledge of places like Altamira and Gualtallary. Antonini's global palate brings new ideas every vintage. These are unshowy, ambitious wines from people who actually understand what they're doing.
