Loibenberg is one of the warmest sites in the Wachau, and Alzinger's Riesling parcel sits on its cooler side: high on the hill, ringed by forest and shaded as the afternoon wears on. That one vineyard sums up the whole Alzinger idea. The estate describes its style as finesse over power and precision over breadth, and here it gets the ripeness of a great south-facing slope without the heaviness. The hillside is a towering wall of terraces with deep loess on the lower slopes and stony, barren, shallow soils up top, and Alzinger plants its Riesling in that hard, shallow ground for a tighter style. Smaragd is the top level of the Wachau classification, and it means the wine is dry. Leo Alzinger Jr. took over the family estate in 2002 and worked a vintage at Müller-Catoir in the Pfalz. The estate sits in Unterloiben, literally across the street from Knoll. He also picks later than some of his neighbors, crediting old vines and the exposure of his parcels, and he says the extra hang time is about balance, not sugar.

"The 2025 Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd shows a cooler face of this site, shaded by forest and benefiting from altitude. Crushed citrus foliage emerges gently on the nose, still imbued with yeasty notes. The palate is a picture of tangerine and mandarin, taut, cool, bright, vivid and smooth. A juicy core of coolness drives it forward, culminating in gorgeous citrus freshness like a crashing wave. This is aromatic freshness in a driven, linear, laser-like package. Undoubted purity is by the by; this is Riesling and stone." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Alzinger

Leo Alzinger Sr. established this Wachau icon in 1983 and has since defined what great Austrian Riesling can be. With holdings in two of the Danube's greatest sites—Loibenberg and Steinertal—he and his son Leo Jr. craft wines of crystalline purity and restraint. Fermented at low temperature in acacia casks and aged on fine lees, their single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings are wildly delicious with serious structure. These are wines that prove minimalism in the cellar is actually maximalism on the palate.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Wachau Smaragd Riesling profile, framed by Alzinger's tight, precise house style: white peach, apricot and lime, with the delicate spice and smoky, stony minerality the region is known for. It's typically medium- to full-bodied but compact rather than broad, with taut, bright acidity carrying a long, dry, clean finish.
