Mühlpoint is where the Steinertal slope meets the valley floor. The vineyard sits at the foot of the Steinertal slope, and its soil carries a brown-red layer of Gföhl gneiss that eroded down from the neighbouring Loibenberg. In the upper rows the mountain still dominates and gneiss breaks the surface. Lower down, the loam gets steadily deeper. (Our favourite detail: the Alzingers have found a pebble in the topsoil from an Ice Age Danube terrace that has long since worn away. The same erosion carried it down the Loibenberg.) Leo Alzinger says all of this shows up mainly as spice, and he calls Mühlpoint elegant, very spicy and salty, with a firm, juicy build. Leo Jr. took over the small Unterloiben estate in 2002, after returning from a harvest in New Zealand. He works for elegance and pure fruit rather than force. This sustainably farmed 2025 Grüner Veltliner is an easy, everyday way into one of the Wachau's most precise cellars.

"The 2025 Grüner Veltliner Mühlpoint Federspiel comes from vineyards at the foot of Steinertal, where eroded gneiss debris mixes with loess and loam. Lovely creaminess on the nose comes with the slightest overtone of mango, only a whiff, but it is beautifully expressed. The palate is pure, bright and precise, a lovely Grüner with real Riesling drive and demeanor in this cooler year." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Alzinger

Leo Alzinger Sr. established this Wachau icon in 1983 and has since defined what great Austrian Riesling can be. With holdings in two of the Danube's greatest sites—Loibenberg and Steinertal—he and his son Leo Jr. craft wines of crystalline purity and restraint. Fermented at low temperature in acacia casks and aged on fine lees, their single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings are wildly delicious with serious structure. These are wines that prove minimalism in the cellar is actually maximalism on the palate.
