A mature, fully resolved Washington Bordeaux blend now around twenty years old — a rare chance to drink a benchmark bottling at its peak rather than guess at its future. Chris Camarda founded Andrew Will in 1989 and has always bottled by vineyard, chasing a Washington sense of place rather than California weight. This wine comes from Champoux Vineyard in the warm, windswept Horse Heaven Hills, planted on sandy, gravelly soils, and is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend rounded with Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Merlot. At this age the tannins have softened and the fruit has turned savory and complex. Sourced privately as a back-vintage; drinking beautifully right now.

Antonio Galloni

"(a blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon, 35% cabernet franc and 8% merlot) Bright ruby-red. Subdued but subtly complex nose is much less expressive today than that of the Ciel du Cheval; hints of berries and cedar. Suave and complex, with a downright spherical texture and lovely depth of flavor. At once silky and bright, finishing with subtle sweet berry notes, fine-grained tannins and terrific persistence." —Stephen Tanzer

"The 2006 Champoux Vineyard (57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot) is another classy wine from this vineyard that offers those textbook Champoux notes of wild herbs, black currants, smoked earth and licorice. This full-bodied, rounded and voluptuous wine has building, fine tannin and a great finish. I love its tannin quality and while it's drinking beautifully today, it will no doubt keep for another decade." —Jeb Dunnuck

Wine Enthusiast

"Cedary and tight, this young, sappy wine has exceptional concentration and weight. Big and a bit blocky, it lacks the feminine grace of the Ciel du Cheval bottling, but compensates with pure power and expression of terroir. Fruit flavors of dense berry and cherry are beautifully managed. Delicious now, it's a wine to age and enjoy for up to a decade." —Paul Gregutt

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb, dry-aged steak, braised short ribs, or hard aged cheeses. A mature red like this wants substantial, savory dishes that meet its softened structure and earthy complexity.

Tasting Profile

Dark fruit turned savory with age -- cassis giving way to leather, tobacco, earth and cedar. Full-bodied but resolved, with softened tannins and a long, mellow finish. Mature and ready.
