Antoniolo stands as the most dynamic force in Gattinara, a historic alpine DOCG far north of Barolo and Barbaresco in the foothills near Lago Maggiore, where cooler climate and altitude craft fragrant, elegant Nebbiolo. This Riserva expression—aged 36 months in oak—showcases the producer's pioneering commitment: Antoniolo was the first in the DOCG to bottle single-vineyard crus and remains one of the few to bottle 100% Nebbiolo without blending. The grapes macerate about 20 days in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, then undergo spontaneous malolactic fermentation, building structure without heavy-handedness. Intensely aromatic, the wine opens with sour cherry, dried rose petal, and blood-orange notes—the signature floral intensity of Alto Piemonte—backed by cool-climate freshness and a silken tannic architecture that reveals its long aging potential.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2020 Gattinara Riserva is a terrific introduction to the Gattinaras. Sage, tobacco, mint, dried herbs and spice tones are beautifully delineated in the glass. This mid-weight, vibrant Gattinara is quite impressive. Best of all, it will drink well with minimal cellaring." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"This red is intense and powerful without being heavy-handed. Cherry, raspberry, iron, eucalyptus and spice flavors are complex and persist through the long, mineral- and spice-tinged aftertaste. Offers fine balance and energy."

More about Antoniolo

If you want to understand how good northern Piedmont Nebbiolo can be, Antoniolo is the place to start. This is the Gattinara estate that pioneered bottling the zone's best vineyards separately: in 1974 the family released single-vineyard wines from Osso San Grato and San Francesco, a revolutionary step for Gattinara.

Mario Antoniolo founded the estate in 1948. His daughter Rosanna drove the move to single-vineyard bottlings, and today her children Alberto and Lorella run the property, about 14 hectares of vines in the Sesia valley in the Alpine foothills, far north of Barolo. The soils here are nothing like the Langhe's marl: volcanic porphyry mixed with glacial moraine, which gives Nebbiolo (known locally as Spanna) a fine-boned, perfumed, high-acid style. The vineyards are farmed along organic lines, with low doses of copper and sulfur and no systemic treatments, and the wines ferment slowly in concrete with native yeasts before long aging.

The range runs from the young-vine Coste della Sesia “Juvenia,” an easy entry point, to the Gattinara Riserva and the single-vineyard crus Osso San Grato, San Francesco and Castelle. The crus are built for the long haul, and mature bottles are some of the most rewarding old Nebbiolo you can find.
