This is Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc from a winemaker who knew the vineyard before he owned it. Kelby James Russell bought fruit from Lahoma Vineyard on Seneca Lake while he was at Red Newt, and in 2023 he and Julia Rose Hoyle bought the vineyard itself. This Reserve bottling is Cab Franc from their own estate. Both are first-generation farmers, so buying a vineyard of their own was a real leap. Lahoma has a lot of sandstone, and the whole Apollo's Praise project centers on Riesling and Cabernet Franc made as site-specific Seneca Lake wines. They take the red seriously: they describe it as Finger Lakes Cab Franc with a side trip to Piedmont. In practice that means handling the fruit roughly, then fermenting and aging it in a large oak tank. If you've wondered whether the Finger Lakes can make red as convincingly as Riesling, this is a good bottle to answer the question.

More about Apollo's Praise

Kelby James Russell and Julia Rose Hoyle established Apollo's Praise in 2023 with the purchase of the Lahoma Vineyard on the west side of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes. The vineyard's sandstone soils are uncommon in the region and lend their Rieslings a real opulence and ripe generosity that stands out in any lineup. Both winemakers have deep experience in the region, and their vision is to make wines that honor terroir-driven expression. This is still early, but the potential here is genuine.

Tasting Profile

Expect cool-climate Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc in a savoury, old-world style: red cherry and raspberry with dried herbs, a hint of bell pepper and a touch of earth. Large-format oak keeps the wood in the background, so the medium body rests on bright acidity and firm, fine tannins, finishing dry and lifted. Think Loire Chinon more than a plush New World red.
