For more than a decade, The Knoll was the Finger Lakes Riesling Kelby James Russell was best known for, and now he owns the hill it grows on. Kelby started making wine from Lahoma Vineyard, on the west side of Seneca Lake, at Red Newt Cellars in 2012. In April 2023 he and Julia Rose Hoyle bought the nearly 20-acre property from grower Ken Fulkerson. Their label, Apollo's Praise, is named for "Glorious Apollo," a song Kelby sang with the Harvard Glee Club as an undergrad. As they describe it, The Knoll is the smallest and highest of Lahoma's four hills and has the starkest sandstone soil. That's a rarity in the Finger Lakes, and they credit it for the richness of the fruit, while the slope and free-draining soil let the grapes hang late into October. The Knoll is also where Kelby first cold-soaked Riesling on its skins, back in 2013, which he counts as a breakthrough for himself and for the region. They call it their "flag-planting" wine: a dry Finger Lakes Riesling meant to stand next to the world's best, "ripe but bracing, explosively fruity but smoky." And no, it isn't named after the Knoll estate in Austria. The growers who planted and named the site had never heard of it.

More about Apollo's Praise

Kelby James Russell and Julia Rose Hoyle established Apollo's Praise in 2023 with the purchase of the Lahoma Vineyard on the west side of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes. The vineyard's sandstone soils are uncommon in the region and lend their Rieslings a real opulence and ripe generosity that stands out in any lineup. Both winemakers have deep experience in the region, and their vision is to make wines that honor terroir-driven expression. This is still early, but the potential here is genuine.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry Finger Lakes Riesling on the riper side: lime, white peach and apricot with a smoky, stony edge. The late-hanging fruit and time on the skins before pressing typically give it a rounder, more textured palate than most of the region's Rieslings, while firm, bracing acidity keeps it taut through a long, mineral finish.
