This is where Ar.Pe.Pe. gets serious: Nebbiolo from the historic Sassella cru, held back nearly four years before release. The Pelizzatti Perego family farms south-facing stone terraces between roughly 400 and 500 meters in Valtellina, the alpine corner of northern Lombardy just south of the Swiss border, where Nebbiolo goes by the local name Chiavennasca and every task is done by hand because the slopes allow nothing else. Stella Retica comes from vines 50 to 100 years old, macerates on the skins for around 120 days, then spends 18 months in 50-hectoliter untoasted casks and two more years in bottle at the winery before it ships. It is darker, more mineral and more structured than their Rosso di Valtellina, without ever losing the transparency and lift that make this the benchmark grower in the region. Drinking beautifully now with an hour in a decanter, and built to reward another decade in the cellar.

"The Ar. Pe. Pe. 2019 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Stella Retica shows a dry aroma of graham cracker or sawdust that takes a minute or two to lift. The bouquet then veers toward a pretty interlude of cassis, forest fruit, or dried blueberry that then segues to chalky tannins that are a little more astringent in the Stella Retica. That extra structure sets this wine up for a pairing with stewed meats with juniper berry and bay leaf. Production is 26,050 bottles." —Monica Larner

More about Ar. Pe. Pe.

ARPEPE is short for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, the founder of the estate. Sadly Arturo passed 15 years ago, but his children have continued the work he started. Emanuele and Isabella have expanded the winery and this allows them the luxury of patience. They can age the wines for years in tanks, concrete vats and large neutral oak barrels until they are ready to bottle, and they can age them even longer in bottle until they are ready to sell and drink.

The vineyard work is laborious and almost entirely by hand due to the steepness of the slope. They eschew the use of herbicides and pesticides and essentially farm the same way as their ancestors did.
