Domaine Armand Rousseau is perhaps the most revered name in all of Burgundy — a family whose wines set the standard for Gevrey-Chambertin at every level. The Clos Saint-Jacques is widely considered the greatest Premier Cru in Gevrey, a south-facing walled vineyard on iron-rich limestone that produces wines of Grand Cru ambition in everything but official classification. Rousseau's plot here is among the largest and most coveted holdings in the vineyard. The 2016 vintage in Burgundy was marked by a cool, late season that delivered wines of extraordinary freshness and structure — wines built for decades. This is as close to Grand Cru drinking as Premier Cru gets.

"Rousseau noted that the 2016 CSJ contains more fruit from the upper portion as the lower part was heavily affected by the frost. An elegant, pure and exuberantly spicy nose blends notes of essence of red berries with wisps of earth, lavender and a background hint of oak. The equally pure middle weight flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration along with the same intense mineral streak as the Ruchottes while delivering stunningly good depth and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced finish. As good as the Ruchottes is, and it's first-rate, there is simply another dimension present here."

"The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is blessed with a bouquet of real pedigree: very complex mixture of red and black brambly fruit, sous-bois, crushed stone and rose petal aromas. The harmony and delineation is outstanding. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, pliant tannins that lend this Clos Saint-Jacques symmetry and poise. Fresh and vibrant, it never relinquishes any of its breeding and tension. The finish is persistent and utterly captivating. Fabulous." —Neal Martin

"The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is showing brilliantly from bottle, soaring from the glass with aromas of raspberries, Griotte cherries, peonies, rich soil tones, smoked meats and dark chocolate, framed by a deft application of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a rich and multidimensional core that's framed by refined tannins and a lively spine of acidity, concluding with a long and pungently intense finish." —William Kelley

"Around 70% new oak. Waiting for 10 years to replant but can’t bring themselves to uproot the old vines. Bottom of the parcel was frosted. Lost about 20%. Very refined on the nose. Lots of life and prancing on the palate. Really very fine and the vineyard speaks so much more articulately than the producer. Soars on the palate. Wonderful spread of flavours on the finish. Very fine tannins. Gorgeous." —Julia Harding MW

Decanter

"The Clos St-Jacques is lovely, wafting from the glass with notes of griotte cherry, dried cep, rose petal and rosehip, with a classy framing of cedary, smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and fine-grained, with an elegant chassis of tannin, a sappy core of fruit. It has a lovely sense of completeness and should develop beautifully in the cellar."

Wine Spectator

"Gorgeous aromas of rose, strawberry, cherry and sandalwood are enhanced by licorice, earth and spice notes on the palate in this complex, harmonious red. Silky and racy, this channels a minerally graphite element on the long aftertaste."

More about Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils

Domaine Armand Rousseau ranks with Romanée-Conti and Leflaive—a name that's simply legendary. They own 10 vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, including an astounding 8 hectares of Grand Crus (Chambertin, Clos de Bèze) and 5.5 acres of the famed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques. Eric Rousseau obsesses over limiting yields, destemming 90% of fruit, and 18 months in barrel (restrained new oak). These are textbook Burgundy-at-its-finest wines: disciplined, transparent, profound.
