This is the Sagrantino that put Montefalco on the map, and a 2001 lets you drink it with more than two decades of age behind it. When textile entrepreneur Arnaldo Caprai bought land in Montefalco in 1971, Sagrantino had nearly disappeared, with fewer than ten hectares left in the ground. His son Marco took over and made reviving the grape the estate's mission, including working with the University of Milan on the first clonal-selection research ever done on Sagrantino. The 25 Anni came out of that work. It's a special selection of 100% Sagrantino from a south-facing vineyard, first made from the 1993 vintage to mark the winery's 25th anniversary, and the name stuck. When it was released in 1996, it drew the wine world's attention to a corner of Umbria that had been little known. Caprai says the wine can age for more than 20 years, so a mature bottle like this one shows what the house had in mind from the start.

Antonio Galloni

"Caprai's Montefalco Rosso, the entry-level wine, is made of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Sagrantino. Although the wine is clearly made to be enjoyed on the young side, in exceptional vintages the Rosso is also capable of developing quite nicely in bottle. The 2001 Montefalco Rosso is in a gorgeous place right now where secondary and tertiary notes have come together with notable grace. Floral red fruits, sweet spices, menthol, licorice and new leather are some of the nuances that linger on the long finish." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 2001 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni, the selection but 50,000 bottles worth, is warmer, ampler, and decisively more powerful on the nose, richer and fuller in flavor than the regular bottling, but with a velvet in the texture that makes it already approachable. There are, nonetheless, easily 15 years of exceptional drinking ahead." —Daniel Thomases

Decanter

"First released in 1993 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the estate, 25 Anni is Arnaldo Caprai's flagship wine and most recognisable bottling. It has an enticing aroma of spicy dried fruits and tobacco, with cedar, damp earth and a hint of bonfire smoke. In the mouth it's delightfully mature, with fragrant potpourri and sticky red and black fruits. The tannins have integrated nicely, leaving a subtle structure that supports the still-fleshy fruit. The mid-palate features touches of tobacco, chocolate, spicy cedar, some meaty notes and a waft of smoke, leading to a soft, long finish. Incredibly elegant, and still with youthful freshness."

"Intense aromas of blackberry and jam with hints of coffee and toasted oak. Full-bodied, soft and round with beautiful tannins. Long and caressing. Best red I have ever had from here."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"Not a wine you will easily forget. Marketing-savvy Marco Caprai has taken a difficult, little-known variety and turned it into an international superstar. A made-to-please wine—meaning all nuts and bolts are screwed tight in terms of color, aromatics and structure—it has tar, coffee, leather and velvety fullness in the mouth."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, grilled lamb chops, tagliatelle or eggs with shaved black truffle, braised wild boar or roast venison. Serve at 18–20°C.

Tasting Profile

Expect Sagrantino's famously powerful style: blackberry and plum with spice, earth and leather, a full body, fresh acidity and some of the firmest tannins in Italy. With bottle age the style typically turns more savoury, as the tannins soften and dried-fruit and tobacco notes come forward. Think the grip of Barolo with darker fruit, finishing long and dry.
