Arnot-Roberts was founded in 2001 by Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts, childhood friends who grew up in Napa Valley, both sons of winemakers. They work with approximately 30 growers across California, focused on cool-climate sites and heritage varieties. The Montecillo Vineyard sits at 1,000-1,200 feet elevation in the Bennett Valley area of Sonoma County, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in 1964—one of the oldest Cabernet plantings in Sonoma, on its own roots. The site receives cooling influence from the Petaluma Gap. Arnot-Roberts is known for a restrained, non-interventionist approach: whole-cluster fermentation, native yeast, neutral oak, and minimal additions. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered with low SO2. A benchmark California Cabernet for those seeking elegance over extraction.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a very hard wine to taste today. Lean and compact, the Montecillo reflects a decision to pick early. That's a tough call, as the alternative was to lose the entire crop. Red fruit, iron, cedar and white pepper struggle to open in the glass. I look forward to tasting this in another few years' time. Today, the 2022 is vegetal and lacking in site character." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard comes from own-rooted vines planted in 1964 at 1,700 feet in elevation, and grapes were harvested on August 30. Matured for 22 months in 15% new French oak, it has pure aromas of black cherry and currant, tobacco, green pepper, garrigue and graphite. The light-bodied palate is delicately styled with modest, 12% alcohol and crunchy, pleasantly herbal flavors. It’s framed by muscular, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity and has a long, refreshing finish. It should be long lived in the cellar." —Erin Brooks

More about Arnot-Roberts

Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts, along with a small group of fellow trailblazers, have led the way in helping redefine what California wine can be and taste like. Their wines have a deep sense of terroir, refined and elegant structure and are deliciously complex. In 2001, when they began this endeavor, finding local wines with these qualities was tough. But along with their aforementioned colleagues, they started a small revolution and these days you can walk into many a wine shop and find an example of what's been coined, “The New California Wine”.

But, perhaps a better sobriquet for Duncan and Nathan's wines might be The New California Classic. Their wines are a nod to the great California wines made in the decades before Parkerization. They have shown that California is capable of producing wines that shine in their youth and will gracefully age to glorious full maturity.

Arnot Roberts has become synonymous with New California wine in a lot of ways. Since their founding in 2001, they've spent a lot of time scouring the state for some of the best previously unknown vineyard sites, doing so with a respect for the environment that is nothing short of remarkable. They work with all their growers to encourage organic farming and minimize their environmental impact: these are wines that are not only delicious, but that you can feel good about drinking.

Like all great winemakers, the cornerstone of Duncan and Nathan’s approach starts in the vineyard. They are dedicated to finding super distinct and unique sites from Mendocino in the North to the Santa Cruz Mountains South of the Bay Area. Their enormous respect for California’s terroir have led them to some of the state’s most celebrated vineyards. But they aren’t just about the famous sites; they know the state is full of amazing and still unheralded regions and they’ve done an incredible job of hunting out great vines in very special spots.
