Sanford & Benedict in magnum — the vineyard that started the Santa Rita Hills, in the format that lets a wine like this stretch out. Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict planted it in 1971 on a north-facing bench above the Santa Ynez River, the first vineyard in the region, and the Chardonnay is still the old Wente clone on its own roots in sandy, silica-rich diatomaceous soil. Because the Santa Ynez Valley runs east-west, it opens a straight corridor to the Pacific ten miles away, pulling cool, foggy air right over the vines. Arnot-Roberts has worked with this site since 2018 and treats it the way they treat everything: native-yeast fermentation, ten months in used French oak and stainless steel. Tension and transparency rather than toast — a bottle worth putting away for a few years as much as opening for a table of six.

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2022 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict comes from the original own-rooted vines planted in 1971, and the wine was matured for 10 months in used French oak. The nose features tones of yellow peach, honey and spice, and as it opens, it reveals pretty citrus blossom perfume. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated yet understated in terms of ripeness. It has an expansive, silky texture, energetic acidity and a long, flinty finish." —Erin Brooks

More about Arnot-Roberts

Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts, along with a small group of fellow trailblazers, have led the way in helping redefine what California wine can be and taste like. Their wines have a deep sense of terroir, refined and elegant structure and are deliciously complex. In 2001, when they began this endeavor, finding local wines with these qualities was tough. But along with their aforementioned colleagues, they started a small revolution and these days you can walk into many a wine shop and find an example of what's been coined, “The New California Wine”.

But, perhaps a better sobriquet for Duncan and Nathan's wines might be The New California Classic. Their wines are a nod to the great California wines made in the decades before Parkerization. They have shown that California is capable of producing wines that shine in their youth and will gracefully age to glorious full maturity.

Arnot Roberts has become synonymous with New California wine in a lot of ways. Since their founding in 2001, they've spent a lot of time scouring the state for some of the best previously unknown vineyard sites, doing so with a respect for the environment that is nothing short of remarkable. They work with all their growers to encourage organic farming and minimize their environmental impact: these are wines that are not only delicious, but that you can feel good about drinking.

Like all great winemakers, the cornerstone of Duncan and Nathan’s approach starts in the vineyard. They are dedicated to finding super distinct and unique sites from Mendocino in the North to the Santa Cruz Mountains South of the Bay Area. Their enormous respect for California’s terroir have led them to some of the state’s most celebrated vineyards. But they aren’t just about the famous sites; they know the state is full of amazing and still unheralded regions and they’ve done an incredible job of hunting out great vines in very special spots.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, Dungeness crab with drawn butter, halibut with beurre blanc, grilled sardines, brandade, or a plate of oysters and Comté to start.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with aromas of lemon peel, green apple, white flowers and a chalky, saline note. The oak is invisible — no toast or butter — so the fruit stays taut and the texture lean. Bright, firm acidity carries a long, mineral, slightly salty finish.
