Azelia's flagship single-vineyard from Castiglione Falletto, in a classical vintage now nicely settled. Luigi Scavino — cousin of Enrico of Paolo Scavino, different family branch — makes Barolo in the modernist-traditional middle: real structure, real terroir transparency, no concessions to fashion. Bricco Fiasco is the family's heart vineyard, replanted to Nebbiolo by Luigi's grandfather Lorenzo in the 1940s and bottled separately starting in 1978 — one of Barolo's pioneering single-cru bottlings. The 2008 vintage is now firmly classical in profile: structured, perfumed, balanced, beginning to show the tertiary complexity that defines mature Barolo. Eighteen years on, it's in a beautiful window — primary fruit settling into rose, tar, and dried herb, with tannins still present but well-integrated.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2008 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is a big, serious wine endowed with layers of black fruit, iron, smoke, licorice and tar. Some of the brighter, higher-toned aromas that are often present in this vineyard are missing in 2008. Instead readers will find a big, full-bodied Barolo graced with exceptional overall balance and tons of energy. The energy and focus of the virile finish is something to behold. The Bricco Fiasco was aged in French oak barrels, 20% new." —Antonio Galloni

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Perfumed leafy Nebbiolo fruit. Elegant, juicy palate structured by fine tannins. Quite fine and unostentatious." —Walter Speller

More about Azelia

Azelia is a small family winery founded in 1920 in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo, now in its fifth generation with Luigi leading the way alongside his wife Lorella and son Lorenzo. They work 16 hectares (75% Nebbiolo) with obsessive low-yield farming and zero vine replacement until natural end-of-life. Their 'normale' Barolo undergoes a punishing 50+ day maceration and ages entirely in large casks—modern in intent but classical in execution.

Ripe red plum, crushed blueberry, blood orange, dried rose, sweet spice, cola, autumn leaves. Mellow tannins, soft fibers. Classical 2008 — generous but proportioned, in a lovely window.
