A First Growth's second wine, now more than two decades old. This is the red second label of Château Haut-Brion, bottled under the Bahans name until the 2007 vintage, when it was renamed Le Clarence in tribute to Clarence Dillon, who bought the property in 1935. The house makes no secret of the intent: same style and elegance as the grand vin, but a wine built to reach maturity faster — which is exactly why a 2001 is the interesting bottle to be buying now rather than laying down. The fruit comes off the same gravel terrace in Pessac, a few miles southwest of central Bordeaux, where the Romans spotted the virtues of those tiny quartz pebbles two thousand years ago, and where Haut-Brion remains the only estate that is both an 1855 First Growth and a Classified Growth of Graves. For anyone who wants the Haut-Brion signature without the grand vin's ransom and its decade of patience, this is the sensible way in.

Robert Parker

88 points

"Always one of Bordeaux’s finest second wines, the 2001 Bahans-Haut-Brion exhibits a dark plum/ruby color as well as a sweet nose of cedar, earth, and red and black currants. Medium-bodied, with a supple texture, fine purity, and admirable length, it will drink well for 5-8 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

15.5 points

"Relatively pale and mature-looking. A little grassy on the nose and a bit tired and rustic on the palate. Perfectly sound for current drinking but it will set no-one alight. Very Graves and lightish. Good balance." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

91 points

"A harmonious red, with plenty of berry, tobacco and cherry flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Another excellent second wine. From Haut-Brion. (March-2002)' Our notes - 57% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cab Franc. Reserved, slightly pruney aromas. Very elegant style with fine mid palate sweetness. Some sweet herbs on the palate. This could be a sleeper. Will drink well in a few years."

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rare côte de boeuf with bone marrow, roast squab or duck breast, lamb shoulder with white beans, mushroom and truffle risotto, or a plate of aged Comté and Mimolette.

Tasting Profile

Dried red and dark fruit, tobacco and earth, with the smoky, gravelly savor of this corner of Pessac. A wine to drink for its secondary, savory register rather than its fruit.
