Charmes is normally the rounded, buttery one of Meursault's great Premier Crus, but this is not the usual Charmes. Ballot-Millot's parcel sits in Dessus des Charmes, the upper section pressed against the Puligny border, where only about forty centimeters of soil lie over bedrock; Charles Ballot says plainly that the site gives him extra minerality. The result splits the difference, wrapping the generous orchard-fruit flesh the climat is famous for around a stony spine most Charmes does not have. Ballot farms without herbicides, picks by hand and ferments with native yeasts, keeping new oak low and skipping batonnage entirely, with twelve months in barrel and six in tank. The 2024 harvest in the Cote de Beaune was small and hard-won after a wet, mildew-plagued season, and the whites that emerged stand out for purity and tension. Worth five years in the cellar and rewarding well beyond that.

"The 2024 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from the Puligny side of the appellation and sees 10% new oak. It has a tightly wound bouquet with yellow plum, wax and light walnut scents that unfurl in the glass. Just a light wet clayey scent loiters off-stage. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, plenty of salinity, precise and linear. It lingers beautifully in the mouth as if hovering just above the ground. Real mineralité here, a superb Meursault from Charles Millot." —Neal Martin
