A hectare of Bonnes Mares — one of the Côte de Nuits' great Grand Crus — farmed by a family better known for Marsannay, which is exactly why this bottle is worth your attention. The vines came to Domaine Bart through the legendary Clair-Dau estate, and the oldest of them were planted in 1922, so this is old-vine Grand Cru fruit from a domaine whose name doesn't carry the markup of the Chambolle aristocracy. The Barts farm on organic principles without bothering to certify; Pierre Bart runs the place today alongside his mother Odile and uncle Martin, the sixth generation of the family in Burgundy. Now a decade on from the vintage, this is a mature bottle ready to show what Bonnes Mares does — power and structure with perfume over the top. If you've been priced out of this hillside, Bart is the way in.

Burghound

"Just like the Clos de Bèze the nose is overtly fruity without much depth that lead to light weight if pretty flavors that are equally simply. I would make the same observation here that this may very well add depth with time in bottle but it's very difficult to see this developing the power and punch of a first-rate example of Bonnes Mares."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, squab, veal loin with morels, coq au vin, or a slab of aged Comté and mushroom tart.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and savory, with red cherry and dried strawberry fruit turning toward earth, forest floor and dried rose with age. Bright acidity keeps it lifted; the tannins have softened into something fine-grained and dusty rather than grippy. Long, mineral, slightly meaty finish.
