A rare chance to taste Bartolo Mascarello, one of the great temples of traditional Barolo, through Barbera instead of Nebbiolo. Barolo makes up most of what the estate produces. The Barbera d'Alba is one of a handful of wines made in small quantities alongside it, and the house's old-school methods apply across the board. At Mascarello the aim is to vinify everything in old cement vats. Maria Teresa Mascarello keeps the cap submerged with a porous wooden board weighed down by a brick. She runs the estate that her father Bartolo made famous with his hand-drawn "No Barriques, No Berlusconi" label, and the approach hasn't softened since. 2015 was a warm, generous year at the estate, and Barbera's natural acidity makes it a good grape for a ripe season. For anyone who loves traditional Piedmont, this back-vintage bottle shows the house style through a different grape.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2015 Barbera d'Alba brings together the sumptuous personality of the year with a very classic sense of structure. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice and floral notes abound in this fleshy, voluptuous Barbera. Drink it over the next decade." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Plum, kirsch and blackberry flavors align with a muscular structure here. Firm and lightly astringent in the end, where a tobacco note lingers. Drink now through 2022."

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.

Tasting Profile

Expect Barbera d'Alba in a firmly traditional style: sour cherry, red plum and a savoury streak of earth and dried herbs, without the vanilla gloss of new oak, since the house won't use barriques. Medium-bodied, with Barbera's hallmark bright acidity and soft, light tannins, it finishes fresh and dry. It's a lively, food-friendly partner to the estate's Barolo.
