Barbera from one of traditional Barolo's most revered estates, grown in San Lorenzo, a vineyard in the commune of Barolo that also supplies part of Bartolo Mascarello's famous Barolo. It gets the same old-school care as the flagship: fermentation in the estate's old cement vats, usually with native yeasts. The difference is that it's built around Barbera rather than Nebbiolo. Barolo is most of what this small house makes, so the Barbera comes in tiny amounts. Part of the appeal is that nothing changes from one generation to the next. Since Bartolo died in 2005 his only child, Maria Teresa, has run the cellar the same way. She still holds the cap of grape skins under the juice with a porous wooden board weighted down by a brick. If you love Mascarello but don't want to wait years for a Barolo to come around, this is the everyday way into the house style.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Barbera d'Alba is fabulous. Bright and radiant, the 2019 is supple and yet classically medium in body. Soft, silky contours wrap around a core of red cherry/plum fruit. Interesting, despite its open-knit feel, the Barbera is a bit lower in alcohol than the norm, and that no doubt adds to its super-classic profile. I loved it." —Antonio Galloni

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Barbera d'Alba profile in an old-school style: ripe dark cherry, plum and a savoury, earthy edge on a medium body. Barbera's trademark bright acidity keeps it lively, the tannins stay soft and it finishes dry and fresh. Think of it as a juicier, more approachable counterpart to Barolo, made for the dinner table.
