A magnum of 1999 Barolo made by Bartolo Mascarello himself, from a vintage his daughter Maria Teresa still uses as a reference point: she has compared her 2019 to the famed 1999. Bartolo was one of the most traditional winemakers who ever lived. He refused the fashion for small French barriques and shorter macerations, and he was one of the "Last of the Mohicans," alongside Teobaldo Cappellano and Giuseppe Rinaldi. The house method is as old-school as Barolo gets. Four crus (Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rue and Rocche dell'Annunziata) aren't just blended, they're co-fermented together in one long fermentation. Maria Teresa took over after his death in 2005 and has changed very little, but a bottle from before then is the real thing, straight from the man who defined the style. The estate is small, and the family has refused to buy more land to ramp up production. This is a big bottle for a table of friends who care about traditional Barolo, so stand it upright ahead of time and decant it off its sediment.

Antonio Galloni

"The 1999 Barolo (magnum) is very clenched at first. Chalk, white pepper and red-toned fruit lend notable vibrancy throughout. There is some lack of focus in the bouquet at first that is distracting. When I come back to the 1999 at the end of the evening, I find a wine of greater cohesion. There is still plenty of drive and persistence. While the wine does clean up, it remains a bit unyielding." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"This 1999 Barolo, medium garnet, has the tell-tale fragrance of Cannubi, subtle notes of black cherries and wild strawberries, roses, anise, and cinnamon, and its medium body deliver plenty of pleasure in its supple texture, silky tannins, mineral and tar notes, and a pure, focused finish. These wines often put on weight and flesh in the bottle and age very well, and I would choose to drink the wine between 2005 and 2020." —Daniel Thomases

"Aromas of leather, berry and tobacco follow through to a full-bodied palate, with sweet and ripe fruit, silky tannins and a long finish. Beauty. The genuine deal here."

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, agnolotti del plin in roast juices, tajarin with shaved white truffle, roast pheasant or hare, aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditional Barolo profile: violets and dried flowers, tar, sour cherry and dried herbs, with leather, truffle and forest-floor notes as these wines mature. Typically medium-bodied but powerful, with high acidity and firm, grippy tannins (think the perfume of red Burgundy with far more structure), finishing long, dry and savoury.
