Eighteen years on, a classically built Barolo from the estate that never stopped making them that way. Bartolo Mascarello is the standard-bearer for traditional Barolo, and Maria Teresa Mascarello carries on her late father's uncompromising methods: four classic crus (Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rue, Rocche dell'Annunziata) co-fermented into a single wine in old concrete and wooden vats, macerated on the skins for 30 to 50 days, then aged two and a half to three years in large untoasted Slavonian botti. All vineyard work is done by hand and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used across the roughly five hectares. 2008 was a cool, drawn-out growing season in the Langhe with a long late harvest of the sort Piedmont had not seen since the 1970s and '80s, giving thick-skinned Nebbiolo with high extract, firm acidity and serious tannic architecture rather than flesh. If well stored, a bottle at this age should be shedding its youthful austerity and moving into its window, with plenty of years ahead; give it several hours in a decant and pour it off the sediment.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2008 Barolo (magnum) is a stunner, as it has always been. Intensely aromatic, silky and layered, the 2008 is so elegant. I especially admire its vibrancy and overall freshness, both signatures of the year. Plum, dried flowers, crushed rocks and lavender build in an undeniably sexy Barolo that hits all the right notes." —Antonio Galloni

Jancis Robinson

"Clear, dark blackish ruby. Herbal leaf-mould aromas. A tiny bit stodgy. No aromatic lift. Correct but not exciting."

Decanter

"Traditional Barolo of the highest order: a little firm yet will mature beautifully."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"There's a dark element to this intense, juicy red, offering black currant and blackberry notes, with a violet accent. Harmonious and supple, revealing refined tannins and a long, fruit-filled finish. Best from 2015 through 2028."

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.
