Bartolo Mascarello's Barolo from the cooler 2014 vintage, a year that rewards careful growers and a classic case for the estate's old-school precision. Maria Teresa Mascarello blends and co-ferments four crus (Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rue, Rocche dell'Annunziata), aging in large Slavonian botti. 2014 produced lifted, fragrant, slightly lighter-framed Barolo with classic perfume and freshness. An elegant bottle from a great traditional name; decant and enjoy now or over the next several years.

Antonio Galloni

"Maria Teresa Mascarello's 2014 Barolo has put on a good bit of weight since I first tasted it, yet it remains nervous, tightly wound and compact - which is to say, very much in the style of the year. Time in the glass brings out a host of bright red cherry, pomegranate, mint, leather and orange peel nuances, but only with reluctance. The 2014 is a positively electric Barolo, but it likely won't be ready to charm anytime soon. Readers should plan on cellaring it for at least a handful of years. Sadly, production is down by 40%." —Antonio Galloni

"Here is another very successful expression from one of the appellation's legendary estates at the heart of Barolo. The 2014 Barolo is light and delicate in appearance with a delightful bouquet of wild rose, forest berry and blue fruit. Violets and lavender give the bouquet a pretty sense of lift and intensity that reminds you of the cool climate and long growing season that characterizes this vintage. This wine also offers evident freshness with bright berry flavors and a subtle feeling of crisp crunchiness. The tannins are superbly integrated within the silky and streamlined body of this elegant Barolo. This wine will surely offer exciting bottle evolution." —Monica Larner

Decanter

"Maria Teresa Mascarello continues the uncompromisingly traditional style of her father Bartolo, who produced a single blended Barolo each vintage. This has a fragrant if reserved raspberry nose that's a touch austere, and while the palate is initially fresh, velvety and concentrated, it soon becomes assertive and austere, almost rigid. There is sweet underlying fruit to be found, however, and there's good length, but it clearly needs time to open up."

"Camphor, fresh earth, incense and tobacco notes swirl around the core of cherry, rendering this aromatic. Firm on the palate, yet balanced, with a lingering aftertaste of sweet fruit, hay and tobacco."

Kerin O'Keefe

"Fragrant, fresh and refined, this radiant red opens with enticing scents of rose, red berry and wild herb. The stunning, vibrant palate is loaded with tension and ethereal finesse, delivering red cherry, strawberry, white pepper and a hint of camphor alongside vibrant acidity and refined tannins. Drink through 2026." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.
