The Langhe Nebbiolo is your shortcut into Bartolo Mascarello, one of traditional Barolo's most worshipped estates, and one of the few bottles from this house you can reasonably get your hands on. The property is tiny, just 5 hectares on terrain steep enough that every job, harvest included, is done by hand. Demand worldwide far outstrips supply, so every bottle is allocated carefully. Most of what the house makes is Barolo. The Langhe Nebbiolo is one of a few small side bottlings, and it sits between the entry-level wines and the Barolo. The house's methods are thoroughly old-school: fermentation in old cement vats, the cap held under with a porous wooden board weighed down by a brick, then aging in large Gerbellotto casks. Bartolo built the estate's reputation by rejecting the region's modernizing trends, and summed it up on a hand-drawn label that read "No Barriques, No Berlusconi." His daughter Maria Teresa now runs the estate, and when people ask whether anything has changed, she says it hasn't. If you've wanted to see what the fuss is about without waiting a decade for a Barolo to come around, start here.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo is a gorgeous wine that shows the pedigree of the year. Bright, pliant and nervy, the 2021 is such a classy wine. Dark cherry, plum, spice, white pepper and crushed rocks are all laced together in this mid-weight, vibrant Langhe Nebbiolo that will delight readers lucky enough to find it. As has been the case for some years now, all of this fruit is purchased from sites in Barbaresco and Alba." —Antonio Galloni

"Lustrous ruby. Spice and minerals on the nose and with a peppery note. Succulent and with gripping, fine tannins and a gorgeous lightness of touch." —Walter Speller

"The fragrant 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo from Maria Teresa Mascarello is a quintessential expression of this youthful version of Italy’s most noble grape. Lovely and lithe, it features juicy cherry, strawberry compote, white pepper and star anise. Aged for 22 months in large Slavonian oak, it’s seamlessly supported by polished tannins. Drink through 2025." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Bartolo Mascarello

Bartolo made a name for himself resisting the modernizing trends in the region, encapsulated by a message he put on a hand-drawn bottle label: “No Barriques, No Berlusconi”. He died a few years ago but the domain is now in the gifted hands of his daughter Maria Theresa, who has raised the profile even further with a series of fabulous vintages. Still hewing rigorously to tradition (long macerations, and no barriques!), they are one of the very few domains to still release just one Barolo made from a blend of all their parcels (as was generally the case before single vineyard cuvees started to appear in the 1960s). 30% of the Barolo comes from Rocche di Annunziata in La Morra; the rest from three different vineyards in the commune of Barolo: Rue, San Lorenzo and Cannubi.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and white truffle or a meat ragù, porcini risotto, beef braised in red wine, roast duck, or aged Castelmagno cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditional Nebbiolo profile: sour cherry, raspberry, dried roses and a hint of tar and earthy spice, with no new-oak vanilla thanks to cement fermentation and large old casks. Medium-bodied, with bright acidity and firm but fine-grained tannins, it typically finishes long and savoury. Think a lighter, more approachable cousin of the house's Barolo.
