Foot-crushed whole clusters in old wooden vats, aged in 600-liter demi-muids—Bernard Faurie makes Hermitage the way it was made a century ago. This gold capsule bottling blends fruit from two of Hermitage's greatest lieux-dits: Les Bessards, a solid slab of south-facing granite producing the hill's most structured, tannic Syrah, and Le Méal, where limestone, flint, and rounded pebbles yield wines of sunshine and mineral elegance. The Faurie family has owned vines in Hermitage since 1935, and Bernard maintained just 1.7 hectares, farming by horse plow with no chemical weed killers. The 2009 vintage was lush and opulent across the Northern Rhône, one of the finest in decades, and Faurie's Bessard/Méal captures that generosity while retaining the structure that only granite and traditional methods can provide. Violet, blackcurrant, spice, and a core of dark fruit that will fuel this wine for decades. Bernard retired in 2020—these bottles represent a closed chapter.

Fourth-generation keeper of family vines in Hermitage since 1935, Bernard Faurie does everything by hand—including crushing grapes by foot. He uses 100% whole-bunch fermentation, eschews chemical weed killers (favoring horse plowing), and ages in oak ranging from new to 6-year-old 600-liter demi-muids. His Syrah is a masterclass in patience and restraint, producing reds and a white Hermitage Blanc from old-vine Marsanne.
