Germany's most acclaimed Pinot Noir house at the very top of its game. Bernhard Huber spent decades proving that Baden — and specifically the limestone slopes around Malterdingen, planted by Cistercian monks nearly 700 years ago — could deliver Pinot to rival fine Burgundy. Since his death in 2014, son Julian Huber has kept the bar climbing. The Alte Burg vineyard, just south in Köndringen, is a VDP Grosse Lage planted to Burgundian selections on weathered limestone. This Grosses Gewächs (the German equivalent of Grand Cru) is the most refined wine in the lineup — perfumed, transparent, built on chalk-fine tannins rather than weight. Burgundy lovers blind-tasting this one tend to land in the Côte de Nuits. 2023 is generous and aromatic — drink with a few years in cellar or pull a cork tonight with air.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherry-pinot reduction; wild mushroom risotto with truffle shavings; squab with fresh figs; aged Comté and Reblochon cheeses; veal medallions with morel cream sauce; pheasant with roasted root vegetables.

Tasting Profile

Perfumed and silky. Wild raspberry, red cherry, rose petal, crushed stone, forest floor, a whisper of clove. Chalky tannins frame a long, mineral-saline finish. Medium-bodied, transparent, beautifully Burgundian.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
