This is the wine that makes the case for Fixin — the appellation Amelie Berthaut has made her life's work, and the heart of a domaine she built by bringing her mother's and father's vineyards together under one label when she came home in 2013. Fixin's old reputation for rusticity, she argues, was never the terroir's fault but a matter of old-fashioned winemaking, and her village bottling is the proof: organically farmed, given a soft touch in the cellar and rested in foudre before bottling. The 2024 was drawn from foudre after assemblage and includes fruit from a new holding in Brochon that is slated to join the Fixin appellation. 2024 was a brutal year across Burgundy — cool wet flowering, relentless mildew, sharply reduced yields, Pinot Noir hardest hit — and the crop here was very small, which makes the brightness and lift in the glass all the more impressive. For the money, village Cote de Nuits rarely gives you this much genuine address.

"The 2024 Fixin Village was taken from foudre after assemblage and contains a new holding located in Brochon that will become part of the appellation. This has a well-defined nose with bright red cherry and wild strawberry fruit and hints of rose petal developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crunchy red fruit and a touch of graphite on the back palate mixed with cracked black pepper. Good depth for a Village, this should give several years' drinking pleasure." —Neal Martin

More about Berthaut-Gerbet

Amélie Berthaut returned to her native Fixin at the top of the Côte de Nuits in 2013 and brought together her mother's and father's family vineyards under one label. The domaine now comprises 13 hectares across the top villages of the Côte de Nuits, including a first-rate premier cru in Vosne-Romanée. Amélie makes wines that are delicate and complex, farming organically and bottling with the kind of precision that speaks of genuine understanding. This is Burgundy kept in the family and made even better for it.
