Les Rugiens-Bas is widely considered Pommard's finest terroir, the parcel locals argue should have been promoted to grand cru. Domaine Billard-Gonnet, farming here since 1766, works it the traditional way: open vats, foot-trodden punch-downs, no fining or filtering. The iron-rich red soils give a dense, brooding wine that demands cellar time. At well over a decade old, the 2007 is now mature and ready; a lighter, earlier-drinking vintage that has arrived at its window.

An earthy, iron-tinged red Burgundy now in its mature phase: savory and resolved, with softened tannins and dried-red-fruit depth rather than primary fruit.
