Founded in 1992 by Pedro Peciña Crespo and his three sons, Hermanos de Pecina draws on Pedro's decades of experience as vineyard manager at the legendary La Rioja Alta. The family owns 50 hectares in the elite north-side Rioja Alta, where 36 months in American oak barrel shaped this 2016 Gran Reserva—a blend of Tempranillo (95%), Graciano (3%), and Garnacha (2%) from old-vine sites. The wine opens with layered aromas of ripe red and black fruit, leather, tobacco, vanilla, and spice, then settles into a smooth, velvety palate blessed with polished tannins and a long, savory finish. This is traditional Rioja made with the rigor and knowledge of an insider, without the prestige markup.

"The 2016 Gran Reserva Señorío de P. Peciña is 100% Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa, produced during an excellent vintage. Sour cherry, dried flowers and gentle oak define the nose, with mildly volatile acidity enhancing the fruity flavors. Dry, lean and fresh in the mouth, that same acidity gives added lift to a tight, precise palate. This is a fine example of classic Rioja in which structure plays the leading role." —Joaquín Hidalgo

Robert Parker

93 points

"I love the textbook nose of the 2016 Señorío de P. Peciña Reserva, as it is earthy, spicy and developed, with notes of leather and vanilla and a touch of smoke and brick dust. It has ripe fruit without excess and a medium-bodied palate with great balance and freshness. It has pungent flavors and is powerful and ripe without excess at 14.5% alcohol and with polished chalky tannins. This matured in American oak barrels for 36 months, during which time it was racked every six months."

Wine Spectator

"Fresh and harmonious, with enticing, savory underpinnings of leather, sweet smoke and eucalyptus enmeshed with notes of macerated cherry and raspberry fruit, singed orange peel, vanilla and smoked paprika. Supple, fine-grained tannins firm the finish."
