Rioja rarely gets to show off this side of itself: a serious, age-worthy white that Ostatu bottles only in vintages good enough to justify it. Made from Viura and Malvasia grown at altitude on chalky limestone in Samaniego, in the Rioja Alavesa, it sees no malolactic fermentation and long aging in used French oak, which builds texture and depth without heaviness. This is the kind of white that rewards a decant and a proper glass, and it belongs to a wave of Rioja producers pushing terroir over formula. If you think of Rioja as a red-wine region, this is a delicious argument to the contrary.
