Albarino barely exists in South Africa, and Botanica is one of a tiny handful of producers growing it, on a Stellenbosch farm better known for flowers. Ginny Povall left a corporate career in Massachusetts, bought Protea Heights in Devon Valley in 2008, and discovered she had also bought South Africa's first commercial protea farm; she has grown grapes there since 2009 and farmed organically since 2014, with no tilling and permanent ground cover to build topsoil. The Flower Girl range is her outlet for the offbeat estate bottlings. The Albarino is hand-harvested and hand-sorted, gently pressed, fermented spontaneously in a concrete egg and stainless steel, and left on its lees a few months before bottling. Aromatic, zesty and bone-dry, it is a genuinely distinctive warm-weather white.

Ginny Povall left America for South Africa's Stellenbosch in 2008, bought Protea Heights farm, and started planting both indigenous flowers and organically-farmed vines. The 21.6-hectare farm grows 10 hectares of indigenous flowers blooming year-round and 5 hectares of high-density biodynamic vineyards. Through regenerative agriculture, they increase soil fertility, build biodiversity, and craft Cabernet-based blends with purpose. It's wine with integrity.
