Blanc de Noirs—white wine made from dark (Noir) grapes—represents a sophisticated style traditionally associated with Champagne's finest producers. Bründlmayer's 2016 Extra Brut Reserve (minimal dosage, maximum dryness) from Kamptal demonstrates that Austrian sparkling wine can achieve complexity and elegance comparable to Champagne's finest. At nine years old, this vintage has developed the maturity and complexity that comes from extended aging on lees in traditional Champagne bottles. The low dosage emphasizes mineral character and acidity over sweetness, creating a wine of remarkable focus. For those seeking sophisticated sparkling wine that rewards serious attention, this wine demonstrates Austria's underrated potential.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs is a pure Pinot Noir that spent more than 60 months on lees. Vivid lemon suffuses fresh, springy yeast pastry on the nose, surrounded by plum, red apple and stone. The palate is taut and bright, beautifully streamlined and fizzing with fine, delicate mousse on this structured, concentrated body. There is almost an echo of minty freshness on the long finish. Classy, elegant, structured and so fresh, with a long way to go." -Anne Krebiehl, MW

"Disgorged on September 27, 2022, after 54 months on the bottle lees, the bronze-colored Bründlmayer 2016 Vintage Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut Reserve opens with a fine, matured, very complex and substantial yet pure and yeasty bouquet of brioche, rye bread and ripe, slightly oxidized apples. Supple and textural on the palate, this is a remarkably fine and elegant, sustainable and structured sparkling wine from Lower Austria (predominantly from Langenlois, Kamptal) that reveals an impressively saline and structured, persistent and characterful finish. It is highly stimulating and complex with a moderate 12% stated alcohol. This is a superb Austrian Sekt Reserve with delicate mousse that intertwines perfectly and seamlessly with the mineral acidity and texture." -Stephan Reinhardt
