João Afonso, a ballet dancer turned winemaker, stumbled into Portalegre in 2009 intending to collect old vine cuttings but instead stayed to protect and restore them. Cabeças do Reguengo is now one of the region's most exciting organic and biodynamic producers, working field-blend mixed varieties the traditional way—spontaneous fermentation, minimal additions. Hard to imagine on a wine-centric continent like Europe there are still undiscovered regions where someone can make genuinely original wine. This is one of those places, and Afonso is exactly the person to do it.
