If you want to taste extreme winegrowing, this is it. The Marier Vineyard sits at 1,500 feet in the Humboldt mountains on extremely steep slopes, with long afternoons that deliver just enough warmth to ripen Syrah this far north. Three French clones (470, 174, 383) are planted on their own roots and head-pruned, which growers believe gives the purest read of a site. A small amount of Viognier goes into the co-fermentation for lift, and the wine sees native yeasts and mostly neutral French oak. Compared to the estate Kimberly's bottling, Marier is the wilder, more mountain-driven, sharply structured of the two. A distinctive bottle from a genuinely singular place.
