Carl Loewen, Leiwener Laurentiuslay Riesling Alte Reben Erste Lage Trocken, 2025

Century-old vines on a steep first-growth slate slope just outside the family's front door: Laurentiuslay is the Loewens' home vineyard, and we think this dry Alte Reben bottling is one of the great values in serious Mosel Riesling. The site is a very steep, terraced, southwest-facing Erste Lage (the Mosel's equivalent of a 1er Cru) of grey slate with deep soils. Because it was never put through Flurbereinigung, Germany's land consolidation, it's still full of old vines with better access to water. The vines behind the 2025 are about 100 years old, each trained on its own single stake, and they are ungrafted vines planted before the First World War that phylloxera never reached. Christopher runs the estate with his father, Karl-Josef, and house practice is hands-off: direct pressing, then a spontaneous fermentation with no temperature control. The must can hit 35°C, which burns off the obvious fruity notes and leaves stony, mineral flavours behind. There's no malolactic fermentation and no enzymes or corrections, and the wine spends at least six months on its lees. The 2025 is still shy on the nose, so give it some air or a little time.

More about Carl Loewen

The Loewen estate has been around since 1803 and boasts some extremely important grand crus sites with some very, very old vines. Of all the underrated estates in the Mosel, it is perplexing that Loewen has stayed under the radar for so long. The wines are pure magic – viscerally expressing the terroir of truly great crus, nurtured by attentive, sustainable vineyard care beyond most growers in the Mosel.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-fried trout with brown butter and almonds; pork schnitzel with lemon; seared scallops; Vietnamese summer rolls with herbs; fresh goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Dry. Quiet on the nose for now. In the mouth it's bright and fresh, and balanced and elegant rather than broad.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
