From the estate that created Chianti Classico's first single-vineyard cru, Il Poggio, back in 1962, this Riserva carries that pioneering pedigree. Castello di Monsanto, in the hills of Barberino Val d'Elsa, was also among the first to drop white grapes from its blend in the late 1960s, betting everything on Sangiovese long before it was fashionable. The balanced, finely structured 2012 is now over a decade old and drinking in a graceful mature window, with the savory complexity that good Chianti earns with age. Mostly Sangiovese, rounded out with a touch of Canaiolo and Colorino.

Mature Sangiovese: dried cherry, leather, tobacco, earth. Medium-bodied with softening tannins, bright acidity, and a long savory finish. Drinking well now.
