This is Brunello made the old-fashioned way, in the former dungeon beneath a castle built in 1441. The space stays naturally cold and humid, which makes it a natural wine cellar. Castello Tricerchi sits in the far north of the Brunello appellation, close to Altesino. Its Brunello vines grow at 290 meters on limestone clay and sand, facing west–north-west, in a cooler corner of Montalcino with sharp swings between day and night temperatures. The Squarcia family still owns the castle, but the vineyards are a recent chapter: they were planted in 1995. Today young Tommaso Squarcia runs the wines with Sangiovese specialist Maurizio Castelli. Their approach is firmly traditional: 100% Sangiovese Grosso from vineyards farmed on organic principles, native yeasts, longer-than-usual skin maceration and aging in large Slavonian oak. This is a small-estate, classic-style alternative to the big names, for anyone who likes their Brunello traditional rather than polished.

Tasting Profile

Expect traditional Brunello: sour cherry and red plum with dried herbs, leather and earthy, savoury notes, the large Slavonian oak framing the fruit rather than adding vanilla. Medium-to-full bodied, with firm, grippy tannins and the lively acidity of a cooler northern site, finishing long and dry. Think a deeper, more structured Chianti Classico, built to age.
