Castello Tricerchi makes its Rosso from two of its Brunello vineyards, Vigna del Piano and Vigna dei Cipressi. That gets you Brunello fruit at a Rosso price, which is real insider value in Montalcino. The estate sits in the far north of the appellation, near Altesino. The vines grow at 250 to 290 metres below the castle, in limestone clay and sand, on cooler slopes where nights drop sharply after warm days. The Tricerchi family finished building the castle in 1441, and their descendants, the Squarcias, still live there. For a long time the grapes went to a cooperative, until Tommaso Squarcia (whose family ran a pharmacy in Rome) decided to make the wine himself. He works in a fully traditional style with Sangiovese specialist Maurizio Castelli: grapes picked by hand, native yeasts and long skin contact. The cellar is a former dungeon under the castle, naturally cold and damp. This Rosso is a good bottle to open while your Brunellos rest.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Rosso di Montalcino profile: red cherry, plum and dried herbs, with hints of violet and earth. The cooler northern slopes and traditional long skin contact typically give a medium body, bright acidity and firm but approachable tannins, finishing dry and savoury. Think of it as a younger, fresher take on Brunello.
